Greece

Region: Europe and North America

Classification of economies by geographic region is based on that of the United Nations Statistics Division.

High Income

Based on the income levels set out by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in its Global Competitiveness Report. However, the groupings are slightly different due to the numbers of economies covered. For GEM, the low income group contains both those classified as low income and lower middle by WEF, and the middle income group has those that WEF groups as upper middle. High income is the same for both GEM and WEF.

  • In Greece, the percentage of the population aged 18-64, which in 2018 was at the early stages of entrepreneurial activity (including self-employment), increased to 6.4% (approximately 418,000 people) from 4.8% (approximately 314,000) in 2017. This rate is among the highest ever recorded in recent years period, however well below the average level of “innovation-driven economies” (2018: 10.1%). Therefore, the data suggests that uncertainty from recent years which affected the level of early stage entrepreneurship, has started to diminish. However, these findings do not appear to be accompanied by a substantial improvement in the qualitative characteristics that affect the viability of these new ventures.

  • In Greece, the percentage of the population aged 18-64, which in 2017 was at the early stages of entrepreneurial activity (including self-employment), dropped at 4.8% (approximately 320 thousand people) from 5.7% (approximately 380 thousand) in 2016. This rate is the lowest ever recorded (2003-2017: 6.9%) and well below the average level of “innovation-driven economies” (2017: 9.2%). Therefore, it seems that despite the gradual stabilization of the economy during 2017, uncertainty remained strong and affected the level of early stage entrepreneurship. At the same time however, a small increase in the supply of waged employment was recorded, while unemployment declined.
