Until 2008, education level was classified as follows:
- None
- Some secondary
- Secondary degree
- Post-secondary degree
- Graduate experience
Starting from 2009, the UN ISCED classification was adopted:
- Pre-primary education
- Primary education or first stage of basic education
- Lower secondary or second stage of basic education
- (Upper) secondary education
- Post-secondary non-tertiary education
- First stage of tertiary education
- Second stage of tertiary education
Where countries have deviating education systems, additional categories are allowed.
The following classification is used for the respondent’s main occupation and applies to the APS data between 2001-2010, where it should be noted that the ‘self-employment’ category was not included before 2009.
- I am currently employed in full-time work
- I am currently employed in part-time work
- I am currently self-employed
- I am currently seeking employment
- I am not currently employed because I am retired or disabled
- I am a student
- I am a full-time home-maker
The respondent’s region and/or city is recorded by the national teams. This was mostly done on a voluntary basis before 2008. Since 2008, more structural and consistent coding is available. This information is not included in the datasets that are published online. Permission to use this information needs to be specially requested.
